COACHING PHILOSOPHY

Mark’s playing career began in 1987 when he signed professionally with Middlesex CCC. Over the course of 14 seasons, he established himself as a key figure within the side, captaining the club for three of those years. In 2001, he made the move to Surrey CCC where he went on to enjoy a further 11 seasons at the top level.

On the international stage, Mark represented England in 52 Test matches. A renowned batsman, he achieved the rare distinction of becoming one of only twenty-five players in history to score one hundred first-class centuries — a landmark that firmly cements his place in cricketing history.

Following his retirement from competitive cricket, Mark has channelled his passion for the game into developing the next generation of players. He has worked with England’s Under 17 and Under 19 squads, as well as the England Lions, before spending five and a half years as England Men’s batting coach. During this period, he worked alongside respected coaches including Pete Moores, Paul Farbrace, Trevor Bayliss, and Andy Flower. More recently, Mark returned to Middlesex CCC as batting coach for three seasons, and for the past four years has served as Director of Cricket at Harrow School.

Mark is driven by a personal commitment to helping players maximise their potential. His inspirational manner, passion, and detailed knowledge of the game underpin the way he works with individuals of all ages. Whether supporting aspiring cricketers within performance pathways or those already competing at a professional level, Mark provides the knowledge and guidance to refine technique and deepen understanding of the game, enabling players to reach the highest level they aspire to.
